WEP was the original standard and used a static key shared by every device on the network. That static, unchanging nature is exactly what makes it so easy to crack today – attackers only need to break the key once to compromise the whole network indefinitely.

WPA fixed part of that problem by generating a new key for every data packet instead of reusing one static key, using a system called TKIP. It was a real improvement, but TKIP itself was later found to carry its own weaknesses.
